The Digital Matrix Review: Front Mission Evolved

For those of you whom didnt know, Front Mission Evolved is a fast paced third person shoot/mech combat action game with online, mech customization, that takes the series in a new direction

1.Graphics(Great)- The detail put into the mechs make them all look stunning.  Every weapon looks like it could exist in real life.  The only thing the game lacks as far as graphics is that most of the areas you run around in look pretty generic.  The outside of the wanzer (mechs) sections of the game should have just been completely left out.

2.Gameplay (Great)- The Mech combat in this game is incredibly fun.  You can target your enemies arms to reduce their accuracy, legs to reduce their speed, or just go for the kill on the torso.  The Customization is deep and full of different ways to make your wanzer stand out.  There is all kinds of different paint schemes to really make your mech your own.  The best part of the game is of course the combat.  The combat in Front Mission is fast and varied.  Depending on how you want to approach battle your can get up close in personal with shotguns and melee weapons, or sit back and bombard your enemies with missles.  I really liked how each weapon is keyed to a different button with no need to switch between them, and the ability to fire all at the same time.

The game is not without its issues though.  The main problem with the mech customization is the agility backpack.  It gives you a better range of movement, but at the same time greatly limits the ammount of weaponry that is equipable.  It sounds realistic, but they should have made you slower without it instead of not allowing you to boost strafe side to side.  The game also suffers from a lack of imagination as certain part upgrades have better stats, but otherwise no other differences. The outside the mech sections again should have just been left out.  The online is fun, but there really isn’t that much to make it stand out from the shooters your already know and love.

3.Story (Good)-  The story starts out exciting and then dives into a sea of cliche.  The way I describe the story is Gundam Wing got sloppy drunk and had a three way with Armored core and any Jrpg in the last 10 years.  It’s enough to keep you interested, but nothing to write home about.  The Voice acting is done well, and so are the character models.

4.Soundtrack (Good)- Nothing about the soundtrack really stood out but the explosions.  Not annoying like some, but nothing noteworthy either.

5.Replay Value (Great)-  As long as the multiplayer stays active its a great 3rd person shooter to play online, and while there is no new game plus that I could find missions can still be played with different mech varients.  It’s always fun to go back and stomp on enemies you were challenged with. I enjoyed the game a great deal, but I’m also a sucker for any kind of mech combat.  I still wouldn’t recomend paying 60$ with it, but in 2 months when its used for 40$ it is completely worth it.
