Have you ever stared up at the star littered night sky and wished you could lead a large army up and down the country side in a lightning storm of unification? My fantasies have been fulfilled because in Hegemony: Philip of Macedon, you get to do just that.
Players will take on the role of Philip, Alexander the Great’s father, and will work to unite Macedon under his rule. In order to do that, you will have to traverse the MASSIVE satellite-accurate map of ancient Greece, capturing cities, farms and landmarks along the way. A great feature of the map is the seamless zooming from the RTS view we’re used to, to a board-game style view that makes the game a little easier to jump around quickly once you control a larger portion of Greece. However, the farther you push your boarders, the more difficult it becomes to fight the war on multiple fronts. Hardcore RTS fans should relish the challenge and the chance to flex their strategic muscle.
History buffs will be pleased with the myriad of information that can be learned of Philip’s ancient world. Just about everything that can be done in the game has a section in the quest log that explains why or how things went down. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to play as Philip rather than Alexander because it was, in fact, Philip who started what his son would later finish. This makes for a refreshing game play experience. I do hope Longbow makes a sequel starring Alexander.
Even if you are tearing up the enemy and steam rolling your way through the game, you will still have to put up with random fires and cities rebelling. This can be extremely frustrating and tedious to take care of. If your patience wears thin easily, you may need to practice deep breathing and count backwards from 10. Hegemony also suffers from a low replay value since it has no multiplayer and no random map or skirmish battles of any kind. These reasons however, are not enough to keep this from being a positive gaming experience. Hegemony may not be a perfect game but it is definitely well worth the thirty dollar price tag!
